Obituary of Muriel Smith

Muriel Winship Smith February 23, 1932 ~ March 13, 2013 Muriel Smith, a much beloved, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home in Ocean View, New Jersey, in the early morning hours of March 13, 2013, with her family by her side after a courageous battle with pancreatitis. Muriel Winship Sauvan was born on February 23, 1932, to Arthur and Gladys (Jones) Sauvan, in Newburyport, Massachusetts. She was happily married to Gordon M. Smith for 50 years until his passing in 2006. Muriel spent most of her early years in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and then moving for a brief period of time to Wilmington, Delaware. In 1959, Muriel and Gordon settled in Ocean City, N.J., and they remained there until they moved into a retirement community in Ocean View, N.J., in 2004. Despite living in New Jersey for more than 50 years, Muriel always considered herself to be a bit of a contrarian in the sense that she loved the New England snowy weather. Even in her 80s, she enjoyed shoveling the snow off of her sidewalk. Early on, Muriel was a competitive bowler and was involved in bowling leagues at the old Somers Point bowling facility. She also participated frequently across the country in national tournaments with the Women's International Bowling Conference. Muriel's other interests included, needlepoint, cross-stitching, and gardening, and particularly enjoyed the mental challenge of completing crossword and jigsaw puzzles and watching Wheel of Fortune on TV. But perhaps her most enduring passion was the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. For most of the 1970s, 80s and 90s, Muriel attended almost every single regular season and playoff home game. Her late husband was an NHL off-ice official, which afforded her season tickets and behind the scene access to many Philadelphia Flyer games and events. Muriel was a passionate dog lover with numerous beloved family dogs over her lifetime; she sadly leaves behind her surviving Bichon Frise, "Ruffles". She was an energetic and active woman who participated in numerous clubs, charities and social groups throughout her life. Muriel was a member of the Ocean City Lions Club from 1995-2002 and she served for two terms as its President. Muriel also was a member of the Avalon Lions Club from 2002 until 2013. She also performed duties at the Lions District level and routinely represented the Avalon Lions Club at Lions Club state conventions. She was a Melvin Jones Fellow awardee, an award named after Lions Club founder, Melvin Jones. Muriel was the catalyst in the formal establishment of the Avalon Lions Club in 2002, and she assured that the Avalon Lions Club was on sound footings and positioned to grow both in numbers and community service contributions. Club growth blossomed during her membership from 62 to 188 members. Equally impressive was her service contributions, which can be traced to her guidance and energetic approach to the Lions goal of "Service to the Community". Surviving are her daughter Cheryl Lieber and her fiance Steve Paddick of Eaton N.H.; grandson Kevin Decosta and his wife Heather, and their two children "great-grandaughters" Shannon and Morgan of Ocean City, N.J.; her sister Eleanor Rover and her husband Hal; nephew, Matthew Rover and his wife Lynn and their daughter Kelsey; and nephew Kevin Rover and his wife Kristin, and their two sons Thomas and Michael. Muriel's charismatic personality and her giving nature will be sorely missed by all of her family and friends, and of course, Ruffles. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday March 20, 2013, at the Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo, 644 South Shore Road, Palermo, N.J.. Beginning at 10 a.m., friends may call until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Burial will immediately follow at the Seaside Cemetery, Palermo, N.J. The family suggests those who desire to send memorial contributions to OCNJ C.A.R.E., PO Box 807, Ocean City, N.J. 08226. You may leave a condolence for the family at www.godfreyfuneralhome.com.
