Obituary of Reverend Father John T. Murphy
On the morning of Monday, January 16th, Reverend John T. Murphy (Roman Catholic Priest) passed away quietly at the age of 95 years old. Father Murphy (also known as Father Jack to family and friends) was born to William and Margaret (nee Shalvoy) Murphy in Freeport, NY on March 12, 1927. Father Murphy grew up in a large Irish Catholic family (8 boys and 2 girls). He went to Grade School at Holy Redeemer Catholic Parish and then to Freeport (NY) High School.. As a youth, Father was an avid swimmer and runner and then, ran Track in High School. After High School, Father was inducted into the Army during World War II. After Basic Training, Father was sent to Italy as the war wound down. He met good friends and learned to ride horses as well as care for them. Thus, horses were always in his life thereafter. Upon discharging from the Army, Father went to school at NYU, Catholic University and Temple University, where he received a Masters in Communications, teaching for a short while at Glassboro State College (now Rowan University). He then entered the Seminary to study for the Roman Catholic Priesthood to dedicate his life to Jesus Christ serving others. Father was ordained a priest on May 30, 1957 in the Order of the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity. Father dedicated his life to the Roman Catholic Church in many ways though the subsequent years. He served in a parish on Long Island. Father later in life joined the Pro-Life movement. He suffered much, even going to jail to save the lives of innocent, unborn babies. Father’s dedication to the Pro-Life movement caused him to pray, protest and raise money to save innocent lives. In recent years, Father lived in the Ocean City, NJ area and continued to devote his life to God through prayer and to write to the many he loved about the importance of prayer in the saving of those innocent lives. Father was cared for by his wonderful nurse, Debbie, and her family in the last 3 years. For those who got to know the real Father Murphy, they know their lives have been blessed. Requiescat in Pacem.
Father Murphy was preceded in death by his father, William, and his mother, Margaret, and his siblings. He is survived by his brother, Jerome, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The Requiem Funeral Mass will be offered privately for family and close friends. Father Murphy will be buried in Westbury, NY alongside his parents and 3 predeceased brothers. In honor of Father John Murphy, please donate to Priests for Life and Human Life International, two of his favorite charities.
In Loving Memory
Reverend Father John Murphy
