James Monnich Thorpe, 92, died peacefully at Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland, NJ. on October 19, 2022. Jim Thorpe, “All-American” was born in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from Carnegie Tech (now Mellon); lived in Dormont PA, Springfield PA, Ocean City NJ and Vineland. He worked for various printing firms in Philadelphia until he retired in 2000. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Navy on the Battleship Wisconsin. As a child, he enjoyed tap dancing and performing with the Gene Kelly Studio of the Dance in Pittsburgh. In Springfield, Jim was a member of the Golf Advisory Board, coached high school girls softball, and was a Republican committeeman. Other adult interests included community theater, playing bridge with friends and listening and dancing to Count Basie and other jazz greats. Survivors include his son, Charles Thorpe and his daughter, Lynn Thorpe. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jester Thorpe. A private celebration of Jim’s life will be held next spring.
