Janet Price

Obituary of Janet E. Price

Price, Janet Elaine, 87, passed away peacefully on the morning of June 6, 2022 with loving family by her side. Born in 1935 to the late Daniel and Ida May (Firth) Horning, Janet was raised in Philadelphia, PA before entering The Charles E. Ellis College for Fatherless Girls in Newtown Square, PA. During the seven years that she lived and attended school there, she was a member of the field hockey team, learned to play piano, and developed her love of swimming during summers spent at Camp Tonawanda and the Ellis pool. Janet was an accomplished swimmer, diver, and Senior Life Saver. She graduated in 1953 having been voted by her classmates (and lifelong friends), ‘Class Clown’. She kept that wonderful sense of humor until the very end.

Janet worked at Johnsville Naval Air Development Center (NADC) in Warminster, PA upon graduation from Ellis. It was there that she met her soon-to-be husband, John H. Price Jr. The two were married for a total of 31 years, raised their two children in Horsham, PA and traveled extensively together as a family creating many happy memories before John’s untimely death in 1991.

Janet had enlisted in The United States Naval Reserves back in 1956 and did not retire until 1992. She served primarily at NAS Willow Grove with active duty assignments all around the world, her favorite being the Lajes Air Base in the Azores, Portugal. She loved her country dearly and was very proud of her military service.

Janet had an adventurous spirit. She enjoyed working with her hands and as a result was talented in woodworking, sewing, and other artistic pursuits. She was an active community member serving as both girl scout leader and den mother when her children were young, volunteering at the polls come election time, belonging to the Holly Drive Card Club, and also The Chief Wives Club where a highlight was working the local airshows and watching her favorite Blue Angels perform each summer. Being employed as a part-time secretary at Neshaminy Warwick- Presbyterian Church also kept Janet busy for many years. Additionally, she was an avid reader, had a great appreciation for many genres of music, and was an animal lover who always had a cherished pet from childhood on.

Janet is predeceased by her two older brothers, James and Robert. She is survived and will be sorely missed by daughter Barbara (Thomas) Herchenrider and son Jeffrey (Claudia) Price. Grandchildren Ian (Ariel), Kelsey (Tom), Tommy, Victoria, and Andrew, as well as, great-grandsons Sky, Cooper, and Callan also mourn the passing of their funny, kind, and sweet Grammie. All those who were lucky enough to have known her realize how Janet’s presence made this world just that much brighter! A memorial/burial service will be held at The Veterans’ Cemetery in Mays Landing, NJ in mid October. Contributions in Janet’s memory can be made to the USO at www.uso.org/donate or to a local animal shelter of your own choosing.
