Lawrence Tormey

Obituary of Lawrence J Tormey

Lawrence J. Tormey “Larry” went home to be with his Savior in Marmora, NJ on August 21st, 2022. “Pappy” as he was called by his 19 grandchildren, was born in Philadelphia, PA.  He grew up in Winchester Park in Northeast Philly. He graduated from Father Judge High School in Philadelphia and a few years later met and married the former Edith Mae Patterson. He lived in Upper Township for many years before moving to Ocean City, then Beasley’s Point. Upon retirement, he moved to Lake Placid, FL, and his last home was near his oldest son in Montgomery, AL. His early years were spent in the travel business working for Pan American Airlines, Liberty Travel, culminating in owning his own travel agency, Cameo Cruises and Tours. Following the 9/11 attacks on the US, his computer knowledge, creativity, and travel experience were instrumental in creating the International Planning Branch of the Federal Air Marshal Service. This service to his country in keeping airplane passengers safe was the pinnacle of his career. He spent ten years with the Federal Air Marshal Service before moving to FL where he volunteered full time as a prison chaplain for 5 years. Within a week of moving to Alabama, in November of 2020, he became one of the most cherished and faithful drivers for Life on Wheels, a pro-life ministry that uses the power of ultrasound to serve women, save babies, and share Jesus. He lived his life, particularly his later years, unashamedly and with passion for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Pappy was a devout follower of Jesus Christ who loved his family and spending time with them more than anything else in the world. Several second loves included travel, fishing, drawing, anything technological, laughing, and of course chocolate chip cookies. Survivors include Edith Tormey; son Timothy and his wife Kim, son David and his wife Deborah, and son Lawrence and his wife Rebekah; siblings Mary Tormey Christy and Donna Tormey; and grandchildren Riley, Jacey, Brennan, Martha, Patrick, Michael, Lily, Brady, Jonah, Olivia, Cecile, Mamie, Asia, Jameson, Zaid, Phoebe, Shawn, Nolan, and Cian. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Frances Tormey. Services will be held on August 25, 2022 at 11 o’clock at First Presbyterian Church of Ocean City where friends may call from 10 o’clock until the time of service. Entombment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Life on Wheels in Montgomery, Al (www.lifeonwheelsalabama.com) or research for Myathenia Gravis disease which Larry suffered from late in life.
