Marion MacKinnon

Obituary of Marion MacKinnon

Marion Louise MacKinnon (nee Lewis), 96 was born April 24, 1926 in Sharon, PA, and resided and died in Ocean City, NJ on August 19, 2022.  Marion was predeceased by her mother Anna Pryde Lewis, her father William Lewis, her brother Gordon Lewis, her husband Aleck M. “Don” MacKinnon, and her son-in-law Guy Hill Buckelew.

Marion grew up in Sharpsville, PA during the depression and, hence, always appreciated what she had in life.  In 1948, she graduated from Penn State University with a degree in education where she met her husband Don and they married later that year. Over the years they resided and raised their children in PA, NJ, and CT.  They continued to be loyal alums and ardent fans of PSU. One will find the MacKinnon name on several rooms throughout the Pattee/Paterno Library including the MacKinnon Lounge and the Marion MacKinnon Adaptive Technology Services Lab. She loved to travel, and she and Don were fortunate enough to visit many places throughout the world. She inspired love of travel in her 4 children and even her 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren that has resulted in her legacy touching every continent of the world.

Marion enjoyed playing golf and skiing. Since moving to Ocean City she participated in summer worship at the Ocean City Tabernacle, was a member of St. Peters Methodist Church, and loved singing in the Angelus Chorus. Her greatest joy was her family, and she cherished the large family Christmas celebrations in Vermont. A testament to how much she was loved, over 100 family and friends attended her 90th birthday celebration in Ocean City.  All remember her welcoming hospitality and her infectious laugh. She is survived by her son Larry MacKinnon (Sylvia) of Williston, VT and her three daughters Janis Buckelew (Ralph) of Ocean City, NJ, Lynn Valeri (Mark) of St. Louis, MO, and Sue Browse (Tim) of Doylestown PA.  She also leaves 10 grandchildren Brian, Chris, Laura, Michelle, Stacey, Brad, Jonathan, James, Collin, and Troy as well as her 7 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and their children.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made out to the Marion MacKinnon Adaptive Services and Technology Lab, and sent to The Development Office, 510 Paterno Library, University Park, PA 16802-1802, or www.raise.psu.edu/MarionMacKinnon.  Also, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, PO Box 97166, Washington DC 20090-7166 or www.plannedparenthood.org.
