Robert Gollihur

Obituary of Robert S. Gollihur

Robert S. Gollihur passed away peacefully at home on July 20th at the age of 71.

Bob was a classic example of a renaissance man who worked his way up from the bottom to the top of two industries. He served as the Operational Vice President for a large regional bank, worked as a gigging musician the bulk of his life, and founded his own online upright Bass company at a time when the internet was brand new. A skilled copywriter, Bob was a regular contributor and editor for several magazines. He was the man you went to when something needed to be done - bathroom install, computer configuration, gravy too salty - somehow, Bob always knew how to fix it and make it right.

Bob enjoyed recognition among bass-playing musicians worldwide, thanks to his founding in 1997 of Gollihur Music  – an online upright bass specialty shop.  A well-traveled player himself, Bob majored in double bass in college, and played his first paying gig as a 13-year-old in 1963. He continued to perform regularly with bands, orchestras, and other ensembles into his 70s.

Bob retired in early 2014, and since then had enjoyed a quiet, peaceful time at his home in Ocean View with his beloved wife, Joanne. He also did a little traveling (New Orleans was a favorite destination) and continued to play music with friends, build a beautiful garden at his house, and spend lots of quality time with his family -- especially his five treasured grandchildren.

He was a loving partner to wife Joanne, a devoted father to his sons, Mark (Rebecca), Geoffrey (Aimee), Evan (Mary), and Matthew, caring brother to Susan, and a truly exceptional grandfather to Drew, Gray, Carter, Emily, and Cora.

Always generous and thoughtful, he will be missed by his family and literally thousands of bassists internationally whose lives he touched in myriad ways over the last two-and-a-half decades.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers or other gestures, Bob requested that you support one of the following charities: The Community Food Bank of New Jersey, The Trevor Project, or Health Redeemer - New Jersey Shore.
