Walter “Matt” Broomell, 87 passed away peacefully March 1, 2022, at Atlanticare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, with his family by his side. Matt was the last surviving child of 14 children born to Lawrence and Viola (Harris) Broomell. Born on July 22, 1934 in Atlantic City, Matt attended Atlantic City Schools before enlisting in the Navy in 1951. Matt served two tours of duty in Vietnam attaining the rank of HTC E7 and earning many medals and commendations. Before retiring in 1972, his last duty station was as an instructor at the Naval War College in Newport RI. After retirement from the service Matt moved to Virginia Beach and later to Seaville, NJ to raise his family while working as an operations manager in various casinos. He enjoyed studying military history and loved building small scale ships and military airplanes. Matt is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Lois (Mulford) Broomell, daughter Kelly McCord, son Scott (Olga), granddaughters Alyssa and Amanda, sister-in-law Ruth Newsome and her daughter Lynn (Newsome) MacEwan, many nieces and nephews, special friends Herb and Barb Yarger and Becky Rogers, who was like a daughter to him. Matt was preceded in death by sons, Matthew K. and Michael S. Arrangements were entrusted to Godfrey Funeral home and private interment will take place in Seaside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Matt’s memory be made to Star Lodge No. 65, P.O Box 65, Tuckahoe, NJ 08250. For condolences to the family, visit www.godfreyfuneralhome.com
