Obituary of Gerald W Abarno

Gerald W. Abarno "Jerry" left this earth and went home to join his beloved wife Marie in the arms of God on July 5. His passing was peaceful and he was surrounded by his family. "Jerry" was born in Long Branch, NJ on September 27, 1936 to Catherine (Flannery) and Gerald Abarno. He spent his childhood in Long Branch. After he graduated high school, he served his beloved country in the US Air Force for four years. He then went on to complete his post-secondary education and became a certified shorthand reporter (court stenographer) for the state of New Jersey for the next 30 years. While being assigned to the Cape May County Court System, he met the love of his life Marie on a blind lunch date. After a brief courtship, they were married in 1962 and made their home in Ocean City, NJ where they raised their two children, Gina and John. Jerry loved sports, especially football. He was an avid Eagles and Phillies fan but his heart was with the Penn State Nittany Lions and over the years, he enjoyed many games and tailgating festivities with family and friends. He was a friend to all who met him and whenever someone came over to visit, the first thing he would say after he shook their hand was "You want a drink?!" He had a great sense of humor, and a warm and generous heart. He was an amazing friend, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather...but mostly, he was a genuinely kind and compassionate man. He was predeceased by his parents, his step-mother Masa, his beloved wife Marie (DiSepio) of 54 years and his granddogs Bobo, Max and Nellie. He also lost his brother-in-law Lenny Pantaleo, who was like a brother to him and a few lifetime friends whom he considered family, along the way. He is survived by his daughter Gina, son-in-law Darren (Johnson), son John, daughter in-law Patty (Keefe), grandson Giovanni, granddog Junior, his companion and angel on earth Mavis Lucchin, along with several extended family members and friends whose lives he touched in such a special way. His Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday morning, July 9th at 11 o'clock from St. Augustine's RC Church of St. Damien Parish, 13th Street at Wesley Avenue, Ocean City, NJ where friends may call from 9:30 am until the time of mass. Burial will follow in Seaside Cemetery, Palermo, NJ. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested in either Jerry or Marie's name to either the Alzheimers Association or the Dementia Society.
