Donald Boyd

Obituary of Donald Thad Boyd

My loving husband, Donald Thad Boyd, passed away peacefully in his home on the day of March the 24th, 2021, at the age of 91. He was born in Philadelphia, son of Thaddeus and Emily (Pennie) Boyd, the oldest of three brothers Dick and Dave. His love and talent as a soccer star led him through the Lighthouse Boys Club, eventually graduating from North East High School with varsity honors, and culminating in a career with the Philadelphia Nationals pro team. In this time, his many “illustrious careers” included a paper boy, caddy, funeral car driver, pawn shop worker, chauffeur, greens keeper, lifeguard, mechanic, and a butcher shop delivery boy (ugh). Not finding his niche, he decided to join the Navy and served 4 years, 10 months, and 13 days, all of which he told us many times. After an honorable discharge, he served 20 years as a member of the Philadelphia Police Department, and retired as a foot-traffic sergeant. During this time, we met and married in 1960, and this coming month would have been our 61st wedding anniversary. Refusing to let him retire, I “encouraged” him to pursue a second career at the Harrah’s Casino and Trump Plaza for the next 17 years. In his eventual retirement from work, he enjoyed golfing, fishing, and Tuesdays at The Trap, where we enjoyed time with our friends. We also spent many fond memories as members of the Commodore Club and Sea Isle Yacht Club, where there is sure to be a toast to him among friends in the Summer. Surviving are Grace (Nolan), his wife, his loving children, son Chris Boyd and wife Karin, and daughter Kelli and husband Steven Ireland, and his three precious grandchildren, Emily, Christian, and Amelia, all of whom he loved dearly. A service of Memory and love will be offered Wednesday, March 31, 2021, Twelve o’clock noon from the Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo, 644 South Shore Road, Palermo, NJ where friends may call from Eleven o’clock until time of service.
