Obituary of Kevin G. Kennedy

KEVIN G. KENNEDY, 63, FORMER COUNCILMAN OF BELLEVILLE Kevin G. Kennedy, 63, entered into eternal life on February 12, 2020 following a brief illness. Mr. Kennedy was retired as a toll collector for the Garden State Parkway. Kevin was dedicated to the well being of the citizens of Belleville and worked tirelessly to that end. He served as Councilman for the 3rd Ward and At Large for twenty years. He was also appointed as Deputy Mayor. He served as a member of the Belleville Planning Board, Belleville Historical Commission, Belleville Historic Society and the Second River Joint Meeting. Kevin was integral in organizing many street naming dedications to honor Belleville soldiers Killed in Action. Kevin also served as an aide to The Honorable John V. Kelly, State Assemblyman of New Jersey. However, Kevin’s greatest and proudest accomplishment occurred in 1983 with the creation of the “Kevin G. Kennedy Civic Association.” As part of his Civic Association he was responsible for granting scholarships each year to college bound Belleville High School seniors as well as honoring deserving citizens with Humanitarian of the Year awards. But Kevin was happiest conducting his Toys for Tots toy drives, making sure many township children got a “visit” from Santa and had toys to open on Christmas. Another great part of his Association was the distribution of food to families in need during the holidays. All of these wonderful acts of kindness and many more will be sorely missed. Kevin was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Marguerite Kennedy; his brother Edward J. Kennedy, Sr., and the love of his life Mary Lou Hood. He is survived by his beloved granddaughter Alyssa Vega; sisters Marguerite Kennedy-Foti (Edward), Judith Greco (Vincent); nieces Donna Kennedy (Himanshu), Nicole Treadway (Adam), Amanda O’Brien (Lawrence); nephews Edward Kennedy, Jr., (Kara), John Greco, Edward Greco; great nephews Aiden Antala, Ajay Antala, Conor O’Brien; great nieces Ella Kennedy and Grace O’Brien. A memorial celebration of Kevin will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Chandelier, 340 Franklin Avenue, Belleville. Donations in Kevin’s name may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Kevin G. Kennedy Civic Association. For condolences to the family, visit www.godfreyfuneralhome.com.
