Obituary of Matthew P Schambers

On Oct. 31st, 2019, the Lord called home our beloved Matthew Paul Schambers, age 89. He left behind his loving wife of 65 years, Rose Forgione Schambers, and his children, Rosemarie S. Vetter, of Ocean City, NJ, and Matthew P. (Lisa) Schambers Jr. of East Greenwich, RI. One of the many joys of his life was his grandchildren, Lindsay (Boston) and Lauren (San Francisco) Vetter, and Emma, Bridget, Matthew, and Isabella Schambers (East Greenwich), who will miss him immensely. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his daughter Victoria Jeanne Schambers, his mother and father, Victoria and Joseph Schambers, and his three sisters and six brothers.

Matthew grew up in the Tacony section of Philadelphia and was the youngest of ten siblings. He married the love of his life, Rose, in 1954. He was a man devoted to sharing, giving, and helping others, especially children. He was well respected by all and volunteered for multiple community organizations, including serving as the President of the Newtown Youth Community Center, the Chairman of Membership for the Bucks County Chamber of Commerce, an Officer of the Newtown Exchange Club, and an Usher at Our Lady of Good Counsel.

Matthew retired as the business proprietor of the Newtown Printing Corporation in Newtown, PA, which he established in 1976. Prior to opening his business, he was a longtime sales executive. After retirement, he worked as a counselor, helping people overcome drug and alcohol addiction.

He was an avid Philadelphia and Penn State sports fan, and an even bigger sports fan and coach of his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was a proud and active participant in his grandchildren’s lives.

Matthew retired to Ocean City, NJ in 1998, and he shared many memorable years with his family at the beach. He enjoyed long beach walks, visiting the boardwalk, and playing tennis, golf, and competitive volleyball. He passed away peacefully in his daughter’s home, surrounded by family, watching sunsets on the bay.

The family will receive friends at 10 AM followed by a Memorial Mass at 11 AM on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019, at St. Frances Cabrini Church of St. Damien Parish, 114 Atlantic Avenue, Ocean City, NJ.

Memorials in Matthew’s name may be made to: St. Joseph’s Indian School for Native American Children, https://www.stjo.org/help-native-americans/memorials/, 1301 North Main Street, Chamberlain, SD, 57325.
