Obituary of Sarah Solomon

Sarah Frances Solomon was born to the late Katherine Lide Ruben and the late Fred Ruben. She was the eldest of their two daughters: Her sister Laura Anna and her Brother Harold. They preceded her in death. Sarah graduated from Mayo High School in Darlington, S.C. in 1952. Upon graduating from high school, Sarah moved to Philadelphia, P.A. She attended the Philadelphia School of Practical Nurses, graduating in 1954. Her nursing career began at Einstein Hospital (Southern Division) in 1954; working primarily in the area of Labor & Delivery. In1960, Sarah began her work for the City of Philadelphia at the Philadelphia General Hospital. Sarah cared for medical and surgical patients until her retirement in 1987. Sarah married Larlis Solomon in 1956. Their union produced four children: Kelvin, Brenda, Derrick and Darryl. Sarah devoted her life to the service of her family and her community. Her love of children was evident in her community work. She was active for over 20 years in the Afro-American Seniors of Pennsylvania. An organization that served "In need" college sophomores with scholarships. She served the organization in various compacities, including the position of president. She was an active member of her labor union, District Council 33 for many years and became a member of the Retirees Club after her working years ended. Sarah was a faithful member of the Saint Columba Church community; now known as Saint Martin De Porres. When her children were enrolled in the parish's school, Sarah was an active member of the Mother's Club. Active in her community, she was elected a for a term as Judge of Elections. Through well spent time and effort, Sarah made sure that she let others in her community know how precious their right to vote is and how it is important to use this right to change our communities for the better. After residing in Philadelphia for sixty-five years, Sarah spent her final months living with her daughter and her family in New Jersey. She is survived by three children: Brenda Addo (Paul), Derrick Solomon, and Darryl Solomon (Terri), four grandchildren: Derrick Perkins, Dionna Solomon-Woodard, Abigail Solomon, and Joy Addo, one great-grand daughter: Ky'lee Woodard, one Aunt: Katherine McCall, and a host of relatives and friends. Her legacy lives on… A viewing will be held from 9:00am to10:00am Saturday, December 1st, 2018 at St. Martin de Porres Church, 24th and Lehigh Ave., Phila. With a service to follow at 10:00 am.
