Obituary of Samuel Capizzi

Samuel J. “Sam” Capizzi, 96, passed away in Ocean City, New Jersey on September    30th in the company of his family.  Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Sam was a proud World War II veteran who enlisted in the United States Navy in (1942) and spent the war as a machinist mate aboard a PBY (Catalina) in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He flew missions to many places including Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and Brazil. These experiences were some of his fondest memories.

A self-made man, Sam started his own property rental business in Philadelphia with the help of his wife, Josephine.   Eventually, in 1966, acquired the Pavilion Motor Lodge in Ocean City. NJ.   Over the next several years, they acquired additional adjacent properties along the Beach block as well as the Harbor House Motor Inn and Marina in Ocean City.   To his delight, all three daughters, and eventually, all seven grandchildren were involved in the running of his businesses.

Sam enjoyed actively participating in many Ocean City organizations.  He was a 40-year member of the Exchange Club of Ocean City, a lifetime member of the VFW, the American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus. His favorite Exchange Club events were volunteering as an usher for the annual Halloween parade and the Miss Ocean City pageant. Sam received an award for his more than 30 years of service to the Miss Night In Venice Pageant Committee as an original Committee Co-Chair. He was also a member of the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce and a former president of the Ocean City Hotel and Motel Association.  He made artifact contributions to the Ocean City Museum and was a benefactor to the Ocean City Humane Society.  But, above all else, Sam enjoyed being with his family and friends.

He is survived his wife of 72 years, Josephine (nee Abramo), daughters Sandra Swantek (Dan), Gail Della Fave (John), and Sharon Capizzi-Walsh as well as grandchildren Brittany Cates (Sara), Christopher Della Fave (Andrea), John Della Fave, Samantha Della Fave, Chelsea Capizzi-Walsh, Conner Capizzi-Walsh, Avery Capizzi-Walsh and great-grand children, Dean and John Rocco Della Fave.  He is also survived by his sister Rita Capizzi.

His Funeral Mass will be offered Thursday morning at 11 o’clock from St. Frances Cabrini RC Church of St. Damien Parish, 2nd Street at Atlantic Avenue, Ocean City, where friends may call from nine o’clock until the time of mass. Burial will follow in Seaside Cemetery, Palermo, NJ.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to either the American Legion, PO Box 363, Ocean City, NJ 08226 or The Exchange Club of Ocean City, PO Box 657 Ocean City, NJ 08226.
