Obituary of Joseph Matera

Matera, Joseph M. 55 of Marmora, NJ. Joe peacefully passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. He courageously battle metastatic melanoma for over two years. Born and raised in Riverton, NJ, Joe spent his young adult years in Ocean City, NJ, and has been a resident of Marmora since 1997. While in Riverton, Joe and his brother, Bob, were the owners of 'Off the Wall Skateboard Supply' from 1977 until 1981, a fun local store that encouraged and exhibited the sport through its team in competitions and demonstrations. Later, in Ocean City, the brothers were also partners of Matera Builders from 1989 until 1998. Joe was a faithful servant in God's kingdom. In 1998, Joe became the founding leader of the 1 st chapter of Christian Surfers on the east coast, Waterman for Christ. Within the four years serving with CSUS, Joe traveled extensively through the country and the world, sharing the love of Christ through the sport of surfing. In 2002, Joe went on staff with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as the Cape Atlantic Area Director. He worked diligently to plant and grow local high school and middle school huddles, encouraging kids, school staff, and coaches. Joe's passion to share Christ and his love of surfing birthed the first FCA Surf Camp in Ocean City, NJ, in the summer of 2004. Surf Camp remains a vital ministry today and is a true testament to Joes love for people, God, and the sport of surfing. Joe served as the National Director of FCA Board Sports from 2008. His passion for surfing and his faith were the foundation from where he taught, inspired, and cared for thousands of young people in the community. Joe attended Second Cape May Baptist Church in Palermo, NJ. Joe lived a remarkable life. His interests were many. He had a joyful love of life, people, travel, and nature. With everything he did, Joe was known for his attention to detail, his passion, his humor, energy, curiosity, unique vision and great contributions to his community and beyond. He had the gift of connecting to people, making everyone he knew feel appreciated and loved. He had a tremendous impact on those he touched because of his incredible love for Jesus. Joe had a beautiful spirit. He lived with a profound sense of love, joy, and freedom. He was a strong mentor, faithful friend, and adoring husband. Most especially, Joe enjoyed being a Dad to his three daughters. Surviving are his wife, Laura Matera (Calabrese) of Marmora, NJ, three daughters, Claire, Kate and Louise, his siblings, Susan Matera of Delanco, NJ, Bob Matera and his wife Lisa of Beesley's Point, NJ, Lisa Harder and her husband George of Delanco, NJ, his father, Joseph Matera of Delanco, NJ, nephews, Tommy and Michael Matera, Jose Matera, Adrian Harder and his father and mother in law, Dr. and Mrs. Carmine Calabrese of Westport, CT. He was predeceased by his mother, Elsie Matera. A Memorial Service celebrating Joe's life will be Saturday at 11 o'clock at The Ocean City Tabernacle, 550 Wesley Avenue, Ocean City, NJ where friends may call from nine o'clock until the time of service.
