Thomas Robb Swenk
Tom went to heaven on Saturday, June 18th, 2022. He accepted Christ as his Saviour approx. 20 years ago at a Cowboy Church in Nashville, TN, where the pastor was someone Tom had gone to college with. Tom was born on August 3, 1939, and raised in Philadelphia, PA, until his senior year of High School. His parents then moved the family to Ocean City, NJ where Tom attended and graduated his senior year at Ocean City High School. Tom earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Union College located in Barbourville, Kentucky where he was also a very accomplished swimmer. Tom loved life and lived it to its fullest. He had many interests, both recreational and in businesses. It’s funny. I’ve known Tom since 1985 and every now and then, we’d be talking about something, and he’d say, Oh, I owned one of them or I used to work at a place like that. He could still always amaze me with his diverse background and stories. So, to name but a few that standout, he was a lifeguard on the Ocean City Beach Patrol were he ended up becoming a Lieutenant for many years. He was a Navy veteran as well as a Reservist in the National Guard. Tom was an accomplished dirt bike rider and enjoyed traveling too many Dual Sport Competitions, where he competed as an “A” rider. Tom was also a skilled snow skier and enjoyed skiing at various mountains in New York; Vermont; and out West, with family and friends. Tom was an excellent volleyball player and had a wicked serve that was tough to receive. He would travel many weeknights and weekends, locally and out of town, to play a sport that he loved. He also traveled to the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah for 15 years to play against players around the world along with the Spike Force team. Tom enjoyed traveling and camping in one of the many motorhomes he had over the years. Tom & Cindy started spending and enjoying the winters in Mesa, AZ. While there, he was also on a tennis team for a few years and enjoyed competing in the leagues. Tom became a firefighter with the Marmora Volunteer Fire Company and enjoyed being a part of that community of people. He became a life member after 20 + years of service. He also became a trustee for the company. Tom owned a car wash in OC. He operated TRSwenk Trucking and drove and operated a tractor & trailer to make ends meet after he purchased Whippoorwill Campground on December 31st, 1976. Tom was fully involved in the operations of the campground and enjoyed and loved Whippoorwill, until his death. His huge presence will be missed by many.
Tom leaves behind his spouse, Cindy; his children, Robb; Chris; & Jimmy Jenkins-Swenk as well as Jennifer Lloyd who he lovingly referred to, as his daughter, and her husband, Joel. Tom also has three grandchildren, Alexis; Travis; & Paisley Jenkins. He also has many sister and brother in laws as well as nieces & nephews. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Shuman & Mina Swenk; as well as his only sister, Barbara McNamee and his sister in law, Cheryl Chalow.
Burial will be private. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at Whippoorwill Campground on the pool deck on what would have been Tom’s 83rd birthday, August 3rd, 2022 from 12-4. Please dress in very casual attire, as Tom would have wanted it no other way.
If you would like to attend, kindly RSVP to 609.425.0679 by July 24th, so that we can prepare accordingly.
