Edna Eileen (McCallion) Zavaglia, 95 - of Linwood NJ, passed away in her home surrounded by family on the evening of Saturday, May 1, 2021. Her loving spirit is carried on by her two living children, Susan Zavaglia Werner and Frederick J. Zavaglia, her 4 grandchildren (Angela, Anthony, Deena and Abigail), two great-grandchildren (Ethan and Kyler) and many nieces and nephews and an extended “family” of friends and loved ones from all walks of life. Eileen was predeceased by her husband, Joseph C. Zavaglia Sr. and her son, Joseph C. Zavaglia Jr. She graduated from Ocean City High School and attended Trenton State College where she graduated with a degree in Physical Education in 1947. It was at Trenton State that she met Joseph, a WWII veteran and standout football player with a recently broken leg. She fondly spoke of the meeting: “He always joked ‘you caught me when my leg was broken’.” They married in August of 1949 and enjoyed 45 years of a marriage devoted to family, faith and community. Growing up in Ocean City, there was nothing Eileen loved more than the beach and ocean. Her family lived on 15th and Wesley, aka Fairview Hall – a beautiful, summer rooming house that was referred to simply as “15th Street”. It was there that every generation learned about hard work and doing their part. Whether cleaning apartments every Saturday, shoveling sand to return it to the beach after nor’easters, or watching bathers run off the beach during a rain storm from the enormous front porch, we all became blessed with a love for the ocean and seashore as a result. Eileen’s passions in life were family, faith, education and service. Originally a physical education teacher, she spent most of her years teaching kindergarten in the Atlantic City Public Schools, as well as many years of religious education in Sunday School. She was a dedicated community volunteer, serving others in a variety of settings - from serving food at Sister Jean’s Kitchen and the AC Rescue Mission, assisting with patient services at local hospitals, and serving on comfort ministries and more at her church. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and friend, Eileen never missed a sporting event, recital, play, event or moment in her family’s life. She loved her home and her community, never wanting to travel far. She will be remembered for her love of holidays, family dinners, hot food and hot coffee, football, and daily devotions and bible study. Brave and dedicated, she knew the true meaning of the word “persevere” and she leaves behind a legacy of strength and compassion that all who knew her will never forget. Affectionately known as “Mom”, “Mom-mom,” “Mama Z,” and “Gigi”, it’s likely that all who ever got to know her will continue to see her beautiful smile, bright happy eyes and hear her warm voice greeting them with an emphatic “oh, you’re here!” , a sassy “Oh dear gussie”, or a pensive “Hmm” when they think of her. Mass will be offered on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Absecon, NJ beginning at 11:00 AM. Due to COVID restrictions, there will be no family visitation prior. For those unable to attend, mass will be livestreamed on Mrs. Zavaglia’s webpage on the funeral home website.
