Obituary of John Myers

John William Myers, 75, of Ocean City, New Jersey passed away on May 15, 2017 after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 3, 1942, he was the son of the late James W. and Mildred Myers.

He graduated from Frankford High School in Philadelphia and went on to West Chester University where he graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. John further his education by earning a Master of Music degree in Music Education from Temple University.

Upon graduation from college, John taught music in Salem, New Jersey. From there, he went on to teach instrumental music and was the marching band director at Columbia Junior/Senior High School in Columbia, Pennsylvania for 33 years. John enjoyed playing trumpet with various community bands throughout the Lancaster County area, and he also gave private music lessons to many area youth. Additionally, John was the choir director at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for several years. He then became Director of Music at Hamilton Park United Church of Christ in Lancaster. Most recently, John was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Ocean City where he enjoyed singing tenor in the choir.

In addition to all of his musical activities, John enjoyed preparing income taxes after retiring from teaching. He worked for H&R Block in both Lancaster and Mays Landing, New Jersey. After 18 years with H&R Block, he earned the title of Enrolled Agent.

John leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Laura (Thompson) of Ocean City; his son, John W. Jr., husband of Kristina Nowack Myers of Springfield, Ohio; his daughter, Jennifer Myers Visscher, wife of Daniel Visscher of Ann Arbor, Michigan; three grandchildren, Laurelai Myers and twins, Annaleise and William Visscher. Also surviving is a brother, Vincent Myers, husband of Karen Myers of Abingdon, Maryland; a niece, Brooke Myers; and a cousin, Maureen Domeracki, wife of Joseph Domeracki of Sea Isle City, New Jersey. He will also be deeply missed by his constant companions, Bailey and Riley, toy poodles.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on May 19, 2017 at St. John Lutheran Church, 1001 Central Avenue, Ocean City, New Jersey. The family will receive friends for visitation at the church beginning at 10:00 am until service time. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania.
