Obituary of Joseph Somerville

Joseph A Somerville, 79, of Ocean City, NJ passed away on April 28, 2017 at the side of his beloved wife Susan. Joseph grew up in Elizabeth NJ. After graduating from St. Patrick's High School he proudly served in the US. Army for two years. Joe earned a business degree from Seton Hall University. After marrying his wife they lived together in Scotch Plains / Fanwood, NJ area where they raised their family. Joe was an active community member participating on the Fanwood Planning Board. As President of the Jaycee he was recognized at the state level for leading an outstanding chapter. Professionally, Joseph held various positions for Western Electric, Lucent Technologies and AT&T. While representing Lucent Technologies he led the junior achievement association to a state award for supporting the youth in community of Newark, NJ. After 38 years of service he retired with Susan to Ocean City NJ. During the happy years of his retirement Joe enjoyed all the wonders of the Jersey shore. He loved sailing, fishing and was an avid reader. He was a very passionate NY Jets season ticket holder for over 50 years. The couple enjoyed their many travels in the US and abroad. Joe was Vice President of Fairness in Taxes, President of the Utility Advisory Commission, a member of Flood Commission and Bay Committee of OCNJ where he passionately advocated for his community.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years Susan (nee Parness) and will be greatly missed by his three children, Shari (Steve) Koeck, of Skippack, Pa, Joseph P. (Katherine) Somerville, of Rio Grande, NJ and Tara K. Somerville of Pottstown, Pa. He is also survived by his grandchildren Brian Z. and Eric J. Koeck. Joseph also had a very special bond to his only brother Robert (Janet) Scott and their family and is also survived by his brother-in-law Ron Parness and his family.

Joseph's Memorial Service will be celebrated on Friday May 5, 2017 at 11:30 AM at The Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo, 644 South Shore Road, Palermo, NJ, 08223, where family and friends may visit from 10:30AM to 11:30AM. Memorial contributions may be made in honor of a special Grandfather and his grandson Brian to Mission for Educating Children with Autism, 100 East Lancaster Avenue, Suite 130, Downingtown, Pa 19335.
