Helen S. McKinley

Helen Jane Seymour McKinley (94) went home to be with the Lord on Thursday March 1st. Born in Bryn Mawr PA., Helen left school in her junior year to work for Bell Telephone in order to support her family. In 1944 she joined the Navy W.A.V.E.S. to finish her schooling and to continue supporting her family. She was a Yeoman in the Navy serving during WWII. She celebrated the ending of the war in Times Square with her best friend Dottie. Discharged in 1945, she went to work for General Electric and then Red Arrow.

She met her husband, Howard McKinley in 1946 in a church youth group. They were married on September 11, 1948 and have enjoyed 69 years of marriage. Being a military family Howard and Helen moved 22 times in their first 50 years together and have made many friends all throughout the country. Helen was a dear and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to so many. No matter where she went she was loved. She continued to make many new friends in the past ten years at The Shores, both residents and staff alike.

Helen was a lifelong member of Central Methodist Church in Linwood where she sang in the choir and served as a counselor for the MYF while her children were growing up. She was active in several counsels at The Shore and volunteered in Country Store.

Family and friends were always her priority. She will be greatly missed by her husband Howard, her two sons Reid (Regina) and David (Karen), her dear brother Wm. Park (Anna) Seymour, her sister in law Lois Finnigan, her 5 grandchildren, Jennifer Gilbert, Sean Wheatley, Christopher, Milissa and Sara McKinley, her 4 great grandchildren, Katie McKinley, Dawson, Hayley and Alana Gilbert and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, David and Jane Seymour, her sisters, Katherine Elizabeth and Grace Ann Seymour and her brother Rev. David Seymour.

A graveside service for Helen will be held Tuesday, March 13 at 10am at Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, 127 Crest Haven Rd, Cape May Court House. A memorial service for Helen will be held Tuesday, March 13 at 2pm at United Methodist Communities at The Shores, 2201 Bay Ave, Ocean City, NJ 08226.

In lieu of flowers, Helen requested donations be made to The Shores at Wesley Manor, Journey Hospice or the Leukemia Society.
